Before we could catch up with Marina De Buchi, she made sure we successfully connected with her charity partner, A21. Her eponymous brand embraces this attitude in every way. It exists because of the charity; fighting trafficking with jewelry is the natural outlet for Marina’s knack for design.

“When I was 18, I moved to London to study fashion. I was attending a women’s event where I saw a video from A21 of a young girl selling cupcakes to raise awareness and raise money to help fight human trafficking. I was inspired by the girl’s courage to take initiative and do something about it. I walked out of that event so inspired and on fire to make a difference.”

The inspiration for Marina De Buchi, the brand, came from the charitable potential of meaningful products. “I always loved designing, however, I had an even bigger passion to make a difference. When I found out there are more slaves today than there have ever been, including in London, my own city, I knew that I needed to do something.”

Surround yourself with people who believe in your dreams and inspire you. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that we need each other. Encouragement is powerful, so encourage one another!

Marina remembers, “I became interested in jewelry through traveling, and each piece I would buy would become sentimental for me. I love that jewelry can be worn everyday and also be a powerful way to start a conversation — and even raise awareness for causes such as A21 and fighting human trafficking. I’ve learned to never underestimate the power of a conversation, as someone simply speaking out led me to start this brand.”

The beauty of her bracelets is a natural extension of the meaning behind them, “As much as I love design and jewelry, the significance it has on people’s lives and the meaning behind the jewelry and the power it has to raise awareness for modern day slavery is my ultimate passion.” Marina’s story is steeped with the sense that everything happens for a reason, “After realizing how product-focused it was, I dropped out of fashion school — but I only learned about A21 because I was in London for school!”

“All my jewelry is personalized as a daily reminder to be yourself! Be free in who you are. I design every piece to have a significant unique meaning for each person and what they currently need reminding of. When I had just started out, a young girl bought a bracelet from me that had ‘HOPE’ engraved on it. She told me it was a really important reminder to her at this time of her life — it was at this point that I realized that there were powerful messages behind these pieces.”
